How I work

Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

A listening program of specially filtered music that helps a chronically on-edge nervous system settle, so the rest of therapy can go deeper.

What SSP is

The Safe and Sound Protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on his Polyvagal Theory. As you actively listen to music that’s been filtered to emphasize the frequencies of the human voice, the small muscles of the middle ear are challenged to contract. This is meant to improve your ability to process human speech and to dampen the low-frequency sounds our bodies associate with predators, or threat.

The goal is to decrease sound sensitivity and activate the neural circuits that help a chronically over-activated nervous system calm down, step by step, so you can regulate yourself more easily.

How I use it

SSP gives your healing process a neural platform of safety. I use it as a preparatory tool before trauma work and during treatment, to help you stay within your “window of tolerance” (the zone where you can feel things without being flooded or shutting down) as you move forward in healing.

The program and fee

The Safe and Sound Protocol is $750 and includes:

  • An initial session
  • Five 75-minute listening sessions
  • A follow-up session
