What EMDR is
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (BLS): eye movements, tapping or auditory tones that alternate left and right. BLS is used to accelerate the brain’s natural capacity to process and heal from traumatic memories, in the context of a safe environment.
As a memory is processed, the brain forms new connections between it and more helpful information. The aim is that the memory becomes something that happened, rather than something that keeps happening: less emotional charge, and new insight into what it meant.
What sessions are like
EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach. We start with your history and with preparation, making sure you have ways to calm yourself before we touch anything painful. Then we work on specific memories in short sets of bilateral stimulation, checking in after each one. We close every session with time to settle before you go on with your day.
You stay in control the whole time, and you don’t need to describe every detail of a memory out loud.
What EMDR is used for
- Trauma and PTSD
- Sexual abuse and other single or repeated traumatic events
- Anxiety and distressing memories that feel stuck

Questions
Is EMDR hypnosis?
No. You’re awake, aware and in control throughout, and you can stop at any time.
Can EMDR be done online?
Yes. I offer EMDR online by video in all six of my states, and in person in Renton, WA.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
It varies with what you’re working on. A single recent event may take fewer sessions than long-standing childhood trauma. We’ll talk about it during your free consult.
